PHED 193

Since the need for a physical education credit has been removed from graduation requirements, enrolling in PHED 193, Marching and Pep Band, in the Spring Semester is no longer mandatory, but it is still a required course for the director to teach. Enrolling in the course is a good way to prepare for the 4th of July parades.

Course Description
This course provides the opportunity for students to develop and improve their musical and marching skills.  Students will learn music of different styles and gain experience performing with a large ensemble.  Students will also gain a knowledge of marching fundamentals, including drill reading, 8-to-5, march-offs, and parade commands.  The act of playing music and marching in an ensemble combines a variety of physical elements, including cardio-respiratory, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility.  Students are expected to strive for a higher level of physical fitness by the end of this course.

Course Objectives

  • Develop and perform a diverse repertoire of music.
  • Perform as a large, uniform ensemble in a variety of venues.
  • Learn the fundamentals of marching band, including drill reading, 8-to-5, march-offs, and parade commands.

Course Format and Grading
The format of this course consists of a combination of full ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, individual practice, and performances.  PHED 193 is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.  Grading will be based upon attitude, attendance, and preparedness.  Attendance to all rehearsals and performances are mandatory for a passing grade.  Students may only miss a rehearsal or performance with prior approval from the instructor.  Students participating in an activity which conflicts with rehearsals or performances should not sign up for this class.

Students must be able to read music and play an instrument used in a marching/pep band.  Permission of the instructor is required to register for this course.
