Ready to join the UMBC Drumline? Here’s the deal: practice, show up to rehearsals, be ready to work, and keep improving each week. We might ask you to try a few different instruments (snare, quads, bass, or cymbals) early on so we can have a balanced Drumline!
The goals:
- Memorize: The UMBC Riser and the National Anthem.
- Practice and Improve: Practice! Learn the warmups and cadences. Show improvement at every rehearsal! Practice!
The goal is to lock in instrument assignments by September 30th, 2026. If you’re struggling to keep pace, we may offer some 1:1 help, and if it’s still too much, support you in working on the music independently so you’re set up for success to try again next season.
We’re stoked to have you and we’re going to do everything we can to get you on the Drumline! If you don’t have access to the warmups, cadences, or band music, please e-mail drumline@umbc.edu.
Instruments
- Snare (up to 4) – Please be prepared to play traditional grip. If you have never played traditional, consider going for bass, tenors, or cymbals.
- Tenors (up to 3) – Our tenors are quints (5 drums). If any music calls for 6 drums, play the highest two drums on the 6″ spock drum.
- Bass Drum (up to 6) – Depending on the number of players we get, parts will be played unison, or as written.
- Cymbals (up to 4) – Plan to play all parts if the music calls for split cymbal parts. If the music calls for visuals during rests you are not required to do a visual there. Visuals will be taught while learning drill and clarity will be given about split parts.
